“Tell Tale:The Story of Momotaro” ©2003
Work created during Kamiyama Aritist in Residence, Japan - three channel video projection - NTSC - one hour loop (subtitled)
Video consist of Kamiyama residents telling a famous Japanese tale, Momotaro (a.k.a. Peach Boy) and a slow motion video of a famous waterfall in Japan. The story is both told by elementary school children as well as elderly visitors to the local community center. Each video is edited and the screens are configured to portray an intimate exchange of stories between the two characters. The elderly and children take turns in telling his/her versions of the same story. The unrehearsed story telling magnifies facial expressions, mannerisms and body gestures thus subtly revealing not only the personalities and history of the individuals but the culture and traditions of a broader Japanese society.
